Influence of wild boar on the biodiversity of dry grasslands

Berlin
Although Berlin has a very high wild boar population, there is a
considerable lack of knowledge about the possible consequences of wild
boar activities on habitats and their biodiversity. Dry grasslands in
forests or their surroundings are also frequently visited by wild
boars. The aim of this project is to find out what long-term effects
wild boars have on dry grasslands, which are valuable for nature
conservation, and on the plant and animal species found there.

BIBS – Bridging in Biodiversity Science
BIBS is a project of the newly founded „Berlin-Brandenburg Institute
of Advanced Biodiversity Research“ (BBIB). The overarching goal is
to bridge disciplines, scales and systems in biodiversity research.
Work packages within BIBS are designed to study the entire chain of
causes, mechanisms and consequences of rapid transitions across
different ecosystems and spatio-temporal scales as one of the most
pressing challenges in biodiversity research. The results will be
collated in an overall synthesis, with conceptual publications
intended for the scientific community, policy makers and the general
public. A new methodological approach is to establish LandScape
Laboratories (ScapeLabs) as a research platform for biodiversity
research on different spatial scales.

Green SURGE - Green Infrastructure and Urban Biodiversity for
Sustainable Urban Development and the Green Economy
This transdisciplinary project on EU-level aims to identify and
develop different aspects of urban green infrastructure as a
conceptual framework for urban planning issues. We work in 20 model
cities, whereas five (including Berlin) serve to answer specific
research questions, collect comparable field data and involve local
stakeholders.

Natural Capital GERMANY – TEEB DE
City Report „Urban Ecosystem Services – Protecting health and
raising quality of life”
The urban natural capital comprises urban nature in its whole
diversity of species, communities and ecosystems and provides numerous
ecosystem services contributing to human well-being. Among these are
not only the supply of water, fresh air or recreation area but also
important benefits to psychological or physiological health (such as
reduction of mortality resulting from cardiovascular diseases,
improvement of learning ability and productivity etc.).
The city report of Natural Capital Germany gives a review of these
ecosystem services and …

Green
Infrastructure in urban spaces: Bases, planning and implementation in
integrated urban development
Through the general discussion on sustainable urban development
currently at both national and international level an increasing
interest in the subject urban greenspace and the concept of green
infrastructure can be observed. Internationally, the EU strategy on
green infrastructure refers to urban areas explicitly. In the
currently developed "federal concept green infrastructure" cities are
playing a role as well.
At the federal level, the “Green Paper on Urban Green” (Grünbuch
Stadtgrün) was presented in 2015 presented by the Federal Agency for
Nature Conservation, to which a corresponding “White Paper”
(Weißbuch) will follow in 2017. The “Conservation Initiative
2020” of the Federal Ministry of the Environment Nature Conservation
and Reactor Safety (BMUB) from 2015 anchored "Green City experience"
(Grün in der Stadt erleben) as one of ten priority action areas of
conservation.

The graduate research training group "Perspectives on Urban
Ecology" (DFG -780) is an interdisciplinary research group comprising
all three universities of Berlin. Our department is participating in
different projects.
Currently, the focus is on "Optimizing urban nature development -
Dynamic change of nature functions and the urban environment of city
dwellers" with the PhD-projects: "Experimental enhancement of
biodiversity in urban residential areas", "Aesthetical enhancement of
vegetation development in suburban areas", "Spontaneous roadside
vegetation as a sink for traffic-related contaminants in urban areas"

species diversity, there is still only limited knowledge of the
mechanisms underlying invasive species impacts. Knowledge of these
mechanisms is particularly crucial for developing a management plan
for the control or eradication of invasive species and for nature
