City Report „Urban Ecosystem Services – Protecting health and raising quality of life”
The urban natural capital comprises urban nature in its whole diversity of species, communities and ecosystems and provides numerous ecosystem services contributing to human well-being. Among these are not only the supply of water, fresh air or recreation area but also important benefits to psychological or physiological health (such as reduction of mortality resulting from cardiovascular diseases, improvement of learning ability and productivity etc.).
The city report of Natural Capital Germany gives a review of these ecosystem services and qualitatively as well as quantitatively illustrates their economic value. Above this, proposals for a (better) implementation of urban ecosystem services into private and public decision-making processes are developed.
The compilation of the city report is based on the participation of authors from science, administration and expert audience.
