Carbon dynamics in soils and vegetation of riparian forests

Riparian ecosystems may be relevant carbon sinks due to the deposition of carbon-rich sediments and the high net primary production. However, carbon stocks are distributed heterogeneously in riparian landscapes. Sedimentation and plant biomass are the main drivers of carbon dynamics. The project aims at predicting the distribution of carbon along the mail spatial gradients of flood plain ecosystems. Hypotheses on carbon dynamics are tested by applying methods in dendrogeomorphology and population ecology.
