BIBS - Bridging in Biodiversity Science

Bild

BIBS – Bridging in Biodiversity Science BIBS is a project of the newly founded „Berlin-Brandenburg Institute of Advanced Biodiversity Research“ (BBIB). The overarching goal is to bridge disciplines, scales and systems in biodiversity research. Work packages within BIBS are designed to study the entire chain of causes, mechanisms and consequences of rapid transitions across different ecosystems and spatio-temporal scales as one of the most pressing challenges in biodiversity research. The results will be collated in an overall synthesis, with conceptual publications intended for the scientific community, policy makers and the general public. A new methodological approach is to establish LandScape Laboratories (ScapeLabs) as a research platform for biodiversity research on different spatial scales. more to: BIBS - Bridging in Biodiversity Science

Green surge

Green SURGE - Green Infrastructure and Urban Biodiversity for Sustainable Urban Development and the Green Economy This transdisciplinary project on EU-level aims to identify and develop different aspects of urban green infrastructure as a conceptual framework for urban planning issues. We work in 20 model cities, whereas five (including Berlin) serve to answer specific research questions, collect comparable field data and involve local stakeholders. more to: Green surge

Natural Capital Germany TEEB DE

Natural Capital GERMANY – TEEB DE City Report „Urban Ecosystem Services – Protecting health and raising quality of life” The urban natural capital comprises urban nature in its whole diversity of species, communities and ecosystems and provides numerous ecosystem services contributing to human well-being. Among these are not only the supply of water, fresh air or recreation area but also important benefits to psychological or physiological health (such as reduction of mortality resulting from cardiovascular diseases, improvement of learning ability and productivity etc.). The city report of Natural Capital Germany gives a review of these ecosystem services and … more to: Natural Capital Germany TEEB DE

Green Infrastructure in urban spaces

Green Infrastructure in urban spaces: Bases, planning and implementation in integrated urban development Through the general discussion on sustainable urban development currently at both national and international level an increasing interest in the subject urban greenspace and the concept of green infrastructure can be observed. Internationally, the EU strategy on green infrastructure refers to urban areas explicitly. In the currently developed "federal concept green infrastructure" cities are playing a role as well. At the federal level, the “Green Paper on Urban Green” (Grünbuch Stadtgrün) was presented in 2015 presented by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation, to which a corresponding “White Paper” (Weißbuch) will follow in 2017. The “Conservation Initiative 2020” of the Federal Ministry of the Environment Nature Conservation and Reactor Safety (BMUB) from 2015 anchored "Green City experience" (Grün in der Stadt erleben) as one of ten priority action areas of conservation. more to: Green Infrastructure in urban spaces

Graduiertenkolleg Stadtökologie

Bild

The graduate research training group "Perspectives on Urban Ecology" (DFG -780) is an interdisciplinary research group comprising all three universities of Berlin. Our department is participating in different projects. Currently, the focus is on "Optimizing urban nature development - Dynamic change of nature functions and the urban environment of city dwellers" with the PhD-projects: "Experimental enhancement of biodiversity in urban residential areas", "Aesthetical enhancement of vegetation development in suburban areas", "Spontaneous roadside vegetation as a sink for traffic-related contaminants in urban areas" more to: Graduiertenkolleg Stadtökologie

Nature conservation and monument preservation in historical parks

Historical parks posess high nature conservation value. The development of conservation goals and managment practice need frequent communication between conservationists and monument..... more to: Nature conservation and monument preservation in historical parks

Interplay among Multiple Uses of Water Reservoirs via InNOVative Coupling of Substance Cycles in Aquatic and Terrestrial Ecosystems (INNOVATE): Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services

Bild

Climate and land-use change may profoundly affect biodiversity and ecosystem functions. This project studies potential trade-offs between land use, biodiversity conservation, and maintenance of crucial ecosystem services in Caatinga agro-ecosystems in Pernambuco, Brazil... more to: Interplay among Multiple Uses of Water Reservoirs via InNOVative Coupling of Substance Cycles in Aquatic and Terrestrial Ecosystems (INNOVATE): Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services

Carbon dynamics in soils and vegetation of riparian forests

Bild

Riparian ecosystems may be relevant carbon sinks, but the mechanisms of carbon cycling are as yet scarcely understood. The project studies the carbon dynamics in Donau-Auen National Park (Austria) applying dendrogeomorphological and forest-ecology methods... more to: Carbon dynamics in soils and vegetation of riparian forests

Testing invasion mechanisms of red quinine (Cinchona pubescens) in Galápagos

Bild

Although biological invasions can pose significant threats to species diversity, there is still only limited knowledge of the mechanisms underlying invasive species impacts. Knowledge of these mechanisms is particularly crucial for developing a management plan for the control or eradication of invasive species and for nature conservation.... more to: Testing invasion mechanisms of red quinine (Cinchona pubescens) in Galápagos

Climate Change and Biodiversity: Development of a Set of Indicators

Climate change leads to partly far-reaching impacts on biodiversity. Among these are direct impacts such as shifts in distribution areas or breeding seasons of species but also indirect impacts mainly resulting from measures ... more to: Climate Change and Biodiversity: Development of a Set of Indicators

Regional identity and biodiversity
